Regardless of the percentage that you want to get there is an Excel formulas percentage than can help you get it. Obviously this can have a great many applications, used to figure deductions for employees as well as to figure sales tax and much more these formulas can make short work of your recordkeeping and mathematical calculations.

You must first know the type of percentage that you are trying to find, this will tell you how to set your formula up. There are several ways to figure a percentage and a formula for each one. If you want to calculate the percentage and you know the total and the amount that you want a percentage for then your formula will look something like this  =A2/B2  with B2 being the whole amount and A2 being the part you want a percentage for. You will get a decimal back but you can format the cell to display it as percentage.

If you have an amount and know a percentage and want to know the total you will use a slightly different formula. This would be applicable for instance if you have a book that is selling for $11 and is 30% off and you want to know the original price. In this case you must divide the sale price by the percentage it is of the total in this case 70% to get the total price. You will need to convert the percentage to decimal form for this calculation.

You and also use the Excel formulas for percentage to figure the difference between two number as a percentage. Commonly used to see how much a business has grown in terms of sales from one period to another you would use this to compare two totals and display the difference in percentage form. To do this formula you will need to use the ABS function which returns the absolute value of a number. The formula for this will look like this =(B2-A2)/ABS(A2) or you subtract the 2 numbers and then divide by the absolute value of the second number. Again you need to format the cell to return the value as a percentage.

These are just a few of the applications for the Excel formulas for percentage, if you have a certain percentage formula you need you can download a cheat sheet that will offer you many of these formulas in an easy to use format.
